Candle man's green Christmas
A CANDLE maker is dreaming of a GREEN Christmas with the world's most eco-friendly gift.
The candle is made from soy wax rather than paraffin - a fossil fuel - and it comes in an attractive glass vase made from a beer bottle.
To save energy, the bottle has not been recycled - it's been recovered.
Designer Kevin Clarke said: "Melting glass down and remoulding it uses less resources than making new glass. But it still uses a lot of energy.
"We have taken an existing product - a beer bottle - and modified it. It takes a little time and effort to hand craft the vase. But not much energy."
More than 95 per cent of household candles are made from paraffin, which is refined from oil. About 125million candles are sold in the UK each year and Christmas is by far the biggest market.
Sales of candles made from natural substances like soy and beeswax have soared this year after a health scare in August. Scientists in the US warned that paraffin candles could cause lung cancer. The British Lung Foundation said: "Occasional use of paraffin candles should not pose any risk. However, we would advise people to take sensible precautions such as opening a window." Kevin , MD of Candles Naturally said: "There has never been more interest in eco-friendly candles and our Recovered Glass candles are the perfect product to meet that interest."
As well as being recovered and redesigned, the candle can be refilled. There's even a suggestion on the candle's recycled container for how the vase can be reused again - as a plant pot. Packaging is all recycled and the words on the packaging are printed in soy ink as all other inks are solvents and therefore harmful to the environment.
"The earth is for life," said Kevin, "not just for Christmas."
Recovered Glass candles come in two sizes, medium and large, and are on sale from only £10. They are scented with a variety of popular fragrances and essential oils. Helping farmers abroad
Candles Naturally's best-selling product is a soy candle contained in a coconut shell, which floats in the bath. As well as using all natural substances, the product helps farmers in Thailand by finding a use for empty coconut shells. The shell is filled with clean, slow-burning soy wax and gently fragranced with fruit and flowers: Frangipani, Mango, Coconut, Mandarin, Vanilla, Fig, Cantaloupe and Banana. Terra Rossa offers 5 premium flavours of Zait & Zaatar (Arabic for olive oil and thyme) from Jordan: Sinolea, Evoo, Basil, Lemon and Chilli, which are traditionally eaten as a snack or an aperitif by dipping a piece of bread into the oil and then gently into the Zaatar. In each case the Zaatar thyme is the same, but the olive oils are different.
The Sinolea extra virgin olive oil is extracted using a natural cold drip method and is unfiltered, while the Evoo is extracted using a first cold pressed method and is filtered. The Lemon oil is made by stone crushing the olives and the lemons together, while the Chilli and the Basil oils are made by infusing at least 250gms of the very best of fresh Jordanian herbs into the Evoo oil until the oil changes its colour to signify that the natural chilli and basil flavour have been completed absorbed.
